Altar Servers

Altar Servers

Altar Servers are volunteers who generally serve at Mass on Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings, or at other important liturgical celebrations during the year. Serving is a prestigious and important position for youth, dating back over one thousand years before Christ when young Samuel served in the temple with Eli the priest.

Volunteers should be between the ages of 8 and 17 years old. For more information, please contact Fr. Richard Murphy at (203) 869-5421, press 9. Click the download to the right to learn more!

Norms for Altar Servers
In October 2018,  Bishop Frank J. Caggiano announced the norms, or rules, governing liturgical and sacramental practices in the Diocese of Bridgeport, were revised over the next four years. “When we concluded the diocesan synod, one of the major initiatives which I confirmed was the need to revise the diocesan sacramental guidelines,” said Bishop Caggiano. “The sacramental guidelines are really the depository of all the norms and guidelines that allow us to pray effectively and reverently as a Church.”

These norms are intended to offer a summary of ecclesial documentation concerning the role of the altar server, while also clarifying the role of the acolyte, within the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy. The role of the altar server in the Sacred Liturgy is unique. The server is both a member of the assembly and a minister in the sanctuary. Because the altar server is involved in many parts of the liturgy, the server assists not only the priest but also assists the deacon, the EMHCs, and the reader as well.
